My name is Shaa’ron Pullem and I am a reading interventionist at Atkins Elementary School in Shreveport. We are at the beginning stages of creating STEM activities and project based learning at Atkins. I am looking for support. What we anticipate is incremental steps in progression to expose our students to STEM activities through cross-curricular activities. What we would like to see happen in year one is support from community members who could help with STEM activities maybe on Fridays or after school, in addition to setting up a booth for our family night affairs. We know that everything cost money and we would be glad to have financial support, but most importantly it is the networking of highly qualified people who are working in STEM careers. Our students lack back ground knowledge. We want to expose them to people who are working in these advanced fields and make real world connections with our students. With our nation failing in social studies and science what better way to expose them to content in a hands-on approach?I have been in recent contact with Barry Guillot with the Wetland Watchers who is a 7th grade teacher in Destrehan. We would like to build a bridge to connect with his students who are growing trees for the Louisiana wetlands. I want to make social studies and science tangible for our students. Please tell me what I can do to help our title 1 school become a choice school who is leading the way.Thank you,Shaa’ron Pullem(313) 610-8812
