Increasing the Roles and Significance of Teachers in Policymaking for K-12 Engineering Education
An Informational Briefing Held in Conjunction with the House STEM Caucus
December 5, 2017
3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
2103 Rayburn Office Building
Teachers are the intended implementers of STEM education reform policies and initiatives but typically have little input on the content or scope of the reforms. The “wisdom of classroom practice,” if incorporated at all, is often a last-minute concern rather than constructive or strategic input from the start. However, teachers can play important leadership roles in this important dimension of the US education system. This House STEM Caucus event will highlight results of a recent convocation at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) that explored teachers’ roles in advancing K-12 engineering education. Presenters will summarize key points made at the convocation and share stories of teacher leadership in STEM education policy. Panelists will include the executive directors of the American Society for Engineering Education and the National Science Teachers Association, two teacher educators, a high school engineering teacher, a former member of the STEM education leadership staff at the US Department of Education, and NASEM staff. Attendees will complimentary copies of the convocation proceedings.
