Dr. Sylvia Earle, a renowned oceanographer and explorer, met with 42 fourth graders from Somis Elementary and Williams School. Channel Islands Park Foundation, a partner of VC STEM, funded the boat trip to Anacapa Island. Sylvia Earle led Channel Islands Live Dive presentations that were broadcast to the National Mall in Washington, DC, as part of a national BioBlitz and a Kids to Parks Day celebration, on Saturday, May 21. All the children received National Park passes.
During the Live Dive, Earle spoke about the kelp forest, one of the richest marine environments in the world, to live audiences at the National Mall in DC, on Anacapa Island, and at the park visitor center in the Ventura Harbor. The presentations are viewable at explore.org.
This effort was jointly funded by the National Park Trust and Channel Islands Park Foundation.
