The group agreed to adopt the proposed problem statement with minor changes:
“In 2016, 57.15% of Northwest Louisiana Metro Area sixth grade students scored at Basic or above in Math, and 63.48% scored at Basic or above in Science. Research indicates that middle grade math is considered a “gatekeeper subject” because of its correlation to both college and career success. Approximately 23% of entering college freshmen fail the placement test for college level math courses and are placed in non-credit-bearing remedial courses.”
The group re-visited the purpose statement from the September meeting; we will review the revisions and decide on the official purpose statement during the December meeting:
“As a community of educators, parents, and civic advocates, unified to connect students to the 21st century workforce, we focus on improving STEM education for our students through achieving math proficiency, as well as increasing awareness of and access to STEM opportunities.
Short-term and long-term goals were outlined with the understanding that discussion with Dr. Wesley Hinze will be necessary to refine the anticipated percentage points.
The group was asked to forward ideas for activities. Next up: Asset mapping. We will try to do the bulk of the asset mapping in silico (by e-mail, google docs, etc.) before the December meeting.
